FAQ's
What
is the Next of Kin Database?
It’s a voluntary program,
allowing those with a valid Ohio driver license, commercial driver license,
temporary permit or identification card to submit two emergency contacts to the
Ohio BMV. This information will
only be accessed if the individual is involved in an emergency situation or is
otherwise unable to communicate. Law enforcement will use the information to notify these
emergency contacts.
Why
should I enter my Emergency Contact Information?
The only information police
have to find your loved ones after an accident is the address on your drivers
license. Is someone always at that
address? If not, a police
investigation begins to search for loved ones.
The national average to find family members after an accident is SIX
hours.
What
about ICE?
ICE is a great idea, and
everyone should put their emergency contact information into their cell phones.
But, in motor vehicle accidents a cell phone can be destroyed or can’t
be located, which means the information cannot be accessed.
I’m
afraid my information will not be secure.
Only authorized law enforcement
and BMV personnel have access to this information. It may only be used to
contact your next of kin designations in the case you are unable to communicate
due to an accident or emergency.
How
can I sign up?
You can go online at www.myemergencycontactinfo.org
or ohiobmv.com. You can also go to
any Deputy Registrars office and request a form to fill out with your Emergency
Contact Information.
