President’s Message April 2010

Police and Firefighter recognition The Safety committee plans our April meeting.  This is a special meeting where we honor our Columbus police officers and fire fighters.  IPOCO began our fire and police awards program in 1969. Each year, five police officer awards and five firefighter awards are given to men & women who are nominated and selected by their superior officers & peers. The criterion for this selection is not based solely on bravery but also includes overall excellence in job performance, service, cooperation, and dependability. Because this nomination comes from their peers it is a meaningful tribute to our police and firefighter recipients.

For many years we invited the award winners and their spouse or guest and representatives from the Columbus Police Department and Fire Division to a banquet in the honor at our April meeting.  Through the years it became difficult for our honorees to attend, often due to their hectic schedules, so we now honor them with a presentation in their honor to the police and fire chiefs or their representatives.  This year we will be presenting safety activity coloring books for the police department to use as a public relations tool when they visit schools and day care facilities.  We will also be presenting a donation to the Central Ohio Fire Museum.

Nominating Committee

The 2010/2011 nominating committee was elected at the March meeting.  Theresa Marut-Orenchuk is our chair.  Vikki Angelo and Stacey Nichols are the other committee members.  Let them know if you are interested in filling a position on next year’s board.   Information on each committee and the responsibilities of that committees chair are available on our website.   Our current officers would also be happy to provide information if you want it.
